Community Mourns the Loss of Elizabeth Schwebel, 1937-2025

Elizabeth (Beth) Schwebel, a beloved community member and dedicated family matriarch, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on July 4, 1937, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Elsworth and Marie Ironside, Beth’s life was marked by independence, adventure, and a profound commitment to service.

From an early age, Beth embraced her adventurous spirit. She traveled throughout Europe with friends, eventually settling in Los Angeles, where she worked in a dental office. It was there that she met her future husband, Sheldon Schwebel. The couple later moved to San Francisco and eventually to Corte Madera, California, where they married in 1962.

Beth often described the moment she first glimpsed Mount Tamalpais as transformative, declaring that it felt like they had found their true home. She cherished raising her two sons, Keith and Brent, devoting herself fully to their upbringing after leaving her position at Shel’s dental practice, a job she found incredibly rewarding.

A Legacy of Service and Community Engagement

Beth’s commitment to helping others extended beyond her family. She played a significant role in the community, teaching dental health in Marin schools through the Dental Auxiliary College. Additionally, she helped expand a local meal delivery program for seniors, increasing the number of meals delivered daily from a handful to over 250.

Her warm personality and vibrant sense of humor allowed her to forge strong, lasting relationships. Beth was actively involved with the Community Congregational Church of Tiburon, where she connected with many through shared values and communal activities. She viewed herself as a spiritual seeker, moving beyond her Catholic upbringing to embrace congregations that reflected her beliefs in compassion and inclusion.

Beth’s environmental advocacy was a testament to her belief in stewardship of the earth. She passionately fought against climate change and championed equal opportunities for all, regardless of religion, race, or gender. When her granddaughter came out as gay, Beth’s unwavering acceptance and unconditional love stood as a testament to her character.

Celebration of Life Planned for Beth

Beth’s infectious spirit and ability to brighten even the darkest days will be deeply missed. She had a unique talent for lifting others’ spirits, whether through a heartfelt hug, a lively game of cribbage, or a well-timed joke. As she passed away surrounded by love and without regrets, Beth left a legacy of kindness, strength, and joy.

She is survived by her husband, Sheldon; her sons, Keith and Brent; and her grandchildren, Charlotte, Georgia, Jack, and Cole. A Celebration of Life will take place on November 15, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church of Tiburon, where friends and family will gather to honor her extraordinary life.
