Former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson is on the verge of joining the Mobile Airport Authority, a significant step as the new Mobile International Airport nears completion. The appointment, which could occur on January 19, 2026, would fill the unexpired term of Treasurer David White, who has chosen to step down after four years of service on the board.
Stimpson, who concluded his twelve-year tenure as mayor in early November, has championed the airport relocation project during his time in office. The ambitious $362 million initiative aims to shift commercial air service from the existing Mobile Regional Airport to a more strategically positioned site closer to downtown. This project is regarded as one of Stimpson’s most significant achievements and is anticipated to be completed later this year.
David White praised Stimpson’s contributions, stating, “Mayor Stimpson’s vision and persistence were instrumental in moving Mobile International Airport from concept to construction.” White emphasized the importance of Stimpson’s involvement as the project continues to progress toward its completion.
In response to his potential appointment, Stimpson expressed enthusiasm about taking an active role in finalizing the project. “I am very excited to take a direct role in seeing this critical project to the finish line,” he stated.
The recommendation for Stimpson’s appointment comes from the current mayor of Mobile, Spiro Cheriogotis. Cheriogotis acknowledged White’s dedication, saying, “I want to express my deep appreciation for David White’s service and steady leadership during an incredibly important period of growth and development for the Mobile Airport Authority.” He further noted that Stimpson’s understanding of the airport’s vision will be invaluable as the Authority shifts its focus to recruiting airlines and marketing the new facility.
The relocation of commercial air service has been a priority throughout Stimpson’s administration, with construction of the new airport beginning in 2022. The new location is designed to attract additional carriers, reduce fares, and expand direct flight options, ultimately making Mobile’s air travel services more competitive with neighboring Gulf Coast airports, including Pensacola International Airport and Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
This appointment marks the second significant board position for Stimpson in recent months. Last month, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey appointed him to the Alabama State Port Authority as well.
Should the City Council approve the appointment, Stimpson will bring his extensive experience and insight into the ongoing development of Mobile’s air travel infrastructure. The implications of this transition are profound, as local leaders anticipate that his presence on the board will enhance the airport’s potential to serve both residents and visitors to the region effectively.
With the Mobile International Airport set to transform local air service, the upcoming appointment of Stimpson stands as a crucial development in the ongoing narrative of Mobile’s growth and economic revitalization.
