Rob Richardson Seeks Second Term on Frankfort Board of Commissioners

Rob Richardson has announced his intention to seek a second term on the Frankfort Board of Commissioners. After serving for two years, Richardson believes he has gained invaluable insight into the city’s operations that will enable him to contribute even more effectively to the community.

“I have discovered that although I had many years of experience working for the City of Frankfort, serving as an elected official has given me better insight into the scope of all city operations,” he stated. His commitment to enhancing the lives of Frankfort residents is evident as he aims to bring a common-sense approach to governance.

During his first term, Richardson highlighted the city government’s achievement of operating within budget while generating a surplus through responsible fiscal management. He noted, “This was a big priority of mine given the challenges of finding new revenue and identifying areas to make cuts.” A key initiative that supports this goal is the city’s investment in OpenGov, a platform designed to enhance the efficiency of the finance department and improve inter-departmental communication.

Key Projects and Future Goals

Richardson also pointed to significant projects underway, such as the Frankfort Fire Department Station 1, currently being constructed on the former Pic-Pac property on West Second Street. He believes this facility will bolster the city’s fire and emergency medical services, providing state-of-the-art technology and training for first responders, ultimately benefiting local residents.

Another focus of his campaign is the The Paddocks development in West Frankfort, which he anticipates will stimulate economic growth and increase city revenues over time. “This development will increase revenues as it grows over the years,” Richardson remarked, emphasizing the long-term benefits for the community.

Reflecting on his experience as an elected official, Richardson recalled advice from a former city commissioner regarding the time commitment required beyond the two monthly meetings. Since taking office, he has maintained a weekly meeting with the city manager to discuss operations and agenda items. “Serving requires research, dedication, and the willingness to learn,” he explained.

Professional Background and Community Engagement

Richardson, a graduate of Madison Central High School in 1987, earned a Bachelor’s in Science in police administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He moved to Frankfort in 1994 as a patrol officer with the Frankfort Police Department and worked his way up to become assistant police chief before retiring in 2017. He currently serves as a law enforcement liaison with the Kentucky Association Chiefs of Police, where he addresses legislative needs and facilitates communication between law enforcement agencies and state government.

His role allows him to engage with various communities across Kentucky, where he has developed relationships with police chiefs and elected officials. These connections have provided him with insights into challenges faced by other communities, which he believes can inform strategies for Frankfort. “I have gained in-depth insight into how some of these communities are finding solutions and sharing this information with city leadership and the commission,” Richardson noted.

Looking ahead, Richardson’s priorities include expanding the city sewer system to foster economic development and housing growth. He also aims to enhance public safety by providing first responders with the resources and training they need while ensuring the city remains financially sound. “Although there has been concern with the budget, city staff, along with strategic planning, has ensured that resources are allocated effectively,” he remarked.

A personal project of Richardson’s is the proposed downtown convention and meeting center, which he believes will be a catalyst for economic growth and complements ongoing discussions about renovations to the Capital Plaza Hotel. He also aims to address the significant shortage of residential housing in the city, emphasizing the need for development in areas zoned for residential use. “With the increase in employment opportunities, people will need somewhere to live,” he stated.

In addition to housing, Richardson supports riverfront development initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and exploring options for recreational facilities, such as a swimming pool and recreation center.

Outside of his professional commitments, Richardson and his wife, Kim, have been married for nearly 33 years and have three daughters: Kolby, 29; Lexie, 28; and Maggie, 21. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the Frankfort city commission, stating, “I love hearing from the citizens of Frankfort about their needs and concerns. I look forward to continuing to serve this year and sincerely hope to be elected for a second term as your Frankfort city commissioner.”
