South Dakota Warns Public of High-Risk Offender’s Release

The South Dakota Department of Corrections has announced the imminent release of a high-risk offender, Dalton Haug, from prison. Haug, aged 25, is set to be released on March 16, 2026, after completing his sentence for intentional damage to property in Brookings County.

Haug stands at 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs approximately 185 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. In light of his criminal history, the Department of Corrections has taken the precaution of notifying both law enforcement agencies and the public regarding his release.

Assessment of Risk and Public Notification

Secretary of Corrections Nick Lamb stated, “Given this offender’s criminal history and an elevated risk of reoffending and violent behavior identified through institutional assessments, law enforcement and the public are being notified of this release.”

This notification is part of a broader initiative where the Department of Corrections communicates such risks. Since 2011, the department has issued a total of 22 public notices regarding pending releases of high-risk offenders.

Importantly, Haug will not be under any parole supervision upon his release, as he has served his full sentence. He will return to Brookings, South Dakota, where he will be reintegrating into the community.

As the release date approaches, local authorities are taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety. The continued issuance of notifications serves to keep communities informed about individuals who may pose a risk.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections emphasizes the importance of community awareness in situations involving high-risk offenders. By informing the public, they aim to promote safety and accountability as Haug transitions back into society.
