Stephen Cloobeck Exits California Governor Race, Endorses Swalwell

Democratic businessman Stephen Cloobeck has officially withdrawn from the race for California governor and has thrown his support behind fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell. This announcement came via a social media post on November 24, 2023, where Cloobeck expressed his belief that Swalwell is the most qualified candidate to lead the state.

Cloobeck, who previously stated he entered the race because he believed other candidates were unfit for the role, emphasized his decision to endorse Swalwell was driven by his respect for Swalwell’s leadership qualities. “I’ve met and talked with every single one of them, and I know what leadership looks like,” Cloobeck wrote. He highlighted his experiences working alongside notable figures such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, reinforcing his credibility in evaluating leadership potential.

Swalwell’s Campaign Focuses on Key Issues

Swalwell launched his campaign just days prior, on November 20, 2023, emphasizing the challenges Californians face, including rising costs and safety concerns. In a statement, he described California as “under attack,” citing issues such as increased militarization of the streets and threats to immigrant communities. “I will be California’s fighter and protector,” Swalwell asserted, highlighting his commitment to tackling these pressing issues.

Cloobeck, who is the founder and former CEO of Diamond Resorts, has more than 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He gained additional public recognition from his appearances on the reality television show Undercover Boss. His extensive background includes serving as chairman of the board of Brand USA Inc. and participating in the Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices in 2004.

By stepping aside to endorse Swalwell, Cloobeck aims to consolidate Democratic support around a single candidate he believes is well-equipped to govern. “If Eric wasn’t in this race, I’d still be running. But with the most qualified person now in the race, it’s time for me to support him completely,” he stated.

As the California gubernatorial race heats up, Cloobeck’s withdrawal may alter the dynamics among the candidates. With Swalwell now positioned as a leading contender, the focus will shift to how he can mobilize support and address the critical issues facing the state.
