Celebrated Educator and Community Leader Janice Cartwright Passes

Janice Gibson Cartwright, a respected educator and community leader, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, at the age of 86. Surrounded by her husband of 62 years, John Cartwright, and their three daughters, Jan’s legacy continues through her family and the many lives she touched.

Born on December 15, 1938, in Zion, Illinois, Jan was raised in a small Wisconsin town. She stood out as the only girl in her high school class to pursue higher education, moving to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin. It was here that she met John, marking the beginning of a partnership that would flourish for over six decades.

After completing her studies, Jan began her career as a home economics teacher in San Diego. She supported John as he embarked on a successful financial planning career. Following the birth of their first daughter, Beth, the family relocated to Palos Verdes, California, where Jan devoted herself to raising her daughters: Pam and Sarah.

Jan’s commitment to her community was evident through her active participation in organizations such as the National Charity League, Girl Scouts, and the PTA. Her warmth, leadership, and energy made her a cherished figure among peers and friends alike. Beyond her family, Jan played a crucial role in building and supporting the financial planning enterprise established by John, which laid the groundwork for a prominent broker-dealer firm.

Her life was characterized by kindness, humor, and resilience. Jan’s nurturing presence offered comfort and understanding to all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, John; daughters Beth Carr, Pam Eckenrode, and Sarah Ehmann; eight grandchildren; her brother, Jim Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Evelyn Gibson; her brother, Jack Gibson; and her sister, Pam Webster.

A gathering to honor Janice’s life will be organized in Pauma Valley, California, at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization dedicated to supporting those affected by the disease.
