Community Mourns Loss of Esteemed Educator Timothy Scully

Timothy Patrick Scully, a respected educator and principal known for his innovative approach to teaching, passed away on December 13, 2023, at the age of 78. Surrounded by family, Scully’s legacy as an influential figure in education is marked by his 35 years of service at North Torrance High School, where he was named California’s Principal of the Year for the 2001-2002 school year.

Scully’s career was characterized by his commitment to student development and community engagement. He introduced a variety of initiatives, including parents’ nights, college recruiting sessions, and community leader meetings aimed at fostering relationships between students and their community. Additionally, he founded a human relations commission and organized diversity conventions to enhance understanding among the student body.

In 2003, Scully earned his Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California, where he received accolades for his dissertation focused on education finance. His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom; he also taught English and Thanatology at West Torrance High School while serving as the freshman football coach.

Scully was a passionate supporter of the Los Angeles Dodgers, celebrating their back-to-back championships with enthusiasm. His love for the team was a significant part of his identity, further endearing him to those around him.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma, Scully demonstrated remarkable resilience, living 24 years after his diagnosis. He became an active fundraiser for City of Hope, contributing to cancer research and support initiatives. His efforts inspired many in the community and highlighted his commitment to helping others.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Scully is remembered by his family, including his wife, Margaret, sons Sean and Jason, and grandchildren Timothy and Rose. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to City of Hope, reflecting his enduring passion for supporting cancer research.

A memorial service will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery and Mortuary in Culver City on December 29, 2023, at 13:00. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated educator and compassionate individual whose impact will be felt for years to come.
