Community Mourns the Loss of Janie Carol Thetford, 73

Janie Carol Thetford, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, at the age of 73. Surrounded by her loved ones, she left behind a legacy of warmth and compassion that touched the lives of many in her community. Born on September 12, 1952, in San Pedro, California, Janie was a woman known for her generous spirit and quiet strength.

A proud graduate of San Pedro High School in 1970, Janie dedicated her life to her family. After marrying, she cultivated a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Her greatest joy came from caring for those she loved, especially her three daughters: Sarah Elizabeth Wiley, Jodi Beth Gilbert, and Missy Jean Wilson. She also took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Stephen Wiley Wilson, who was described as the “apple of her eye.”

Janie had a profound connection to nature, often feeding squirrels and birds in her garden, finding peace in nurturing the smallest creatures. This passion extended to her daughters, whom she taught to respect and protect all living beings. Her love for animals was evident in her bond with her dog, Willie, and her cat, Quinn, who were her constant companions.

Janie’s family remembers her as a beacon of kindness and compassion. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Johnny, and her first husband. Surviving her are her loving husband, Phil Max Thetford, and her daughters, who carry forward her spirit of love and generosity.

A service to honor Janie’s life is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Green Hills in San Pedro. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the San Pedro Animal Shelter, a cause that Janie held dear throughout her life.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Janie will remember her not just for her gentle demeanor but for the lasting impact she had on their lives. Her memory will continue to serve as a source of comfort and strength for all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
