Newly uncovered emails from the late financier Jeffrey Epstein suggest that he believed environmental destruction could offer a solution to what he termed “overpopulation.” In a 2016 exchange with German philosopher and artificial intelligence researcher Joscha Bach, Epstein controversially argued that climate change might be necessary for human survival.
Epstein’s correspondence, revealed by Fast Company, contains alarming statements that reflect his views on the intersection of environmental issues and population control. He wrote, “Maybe climate change is a good way of dealing with overpopulation,” adding that natural disasters like forest fires could be beneficial for the human species. His remarks were laced with typos but conveyed a disturbing perspective on humanity’s future.
In response to these revelations, climatologist Michael Mann emphasized that such views are not surprising given Epstein’s connections to various controversial figures. Mann pointed out that Epstein associated with individuals like Bjorn Lomborg, a known climate change skeptic, who has been criticized for spreading misinformation that undermines environmental progress. Mann stated, “Lomborg cynically uses his feigned concern for the poor and downtrodden people of the Global South to justify continued fossil fuel dependence.”
The notion of “overpopulation” has historically been a contentious issue, often leading to extreme and unethical proposals. Mann argued that the real solution lies not in drastic measures but in equitable resource distribution. As countries achieve greater affluence, birth rates tend to decline naturally, helping mitigate concerns about overpopulation.

Moreover, in the United States alone, an estimated 771,000 individuals have experienced homelessness since 2007, illustrating that the issue is not one of scarcity but of access to resources.
