New AI Insights Aim to Enhance Safety in Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) face mounting pressure to operate safely and effectively, as any errors can significantly undermine public trust. A recent study published in the October 2023 issue of IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems highlights how explainable artificial intelligence (AI) can be a crucial tool in enhancing AV safety. Researchers aim to understand the decision-making processes of AVs, identifying where mistakes occur and how to rectify them.

Shahin Atakishiyev, a deep learning researcher at the University of Alberta, Canada, emphasizes that the inner workings of AVs often remain opaque to users. “Ordinary people, such as passengers and bystanders, do not know how an autonomous vehicle makes real-time driving decisions,” he states. The advent of explainable AI allows engineers and users to probe deeper into these systems, asking questions about the factors influencing critical decisions, such as sudden braking.

Real-Time Feedback and Passenger Safety

Atakishiyev and his team illustrate the potential for real-time feedback to enhance passenger safety. They reference a case study where a research group modified a speed limit sign by adding a sticker, altering a 35-mile-per-hour (56 kilometers per hour) sign to be misread as 85 miles per hour (137 kilometers per hour) by a Tesla Model S. As the vehicle approached the altered sign, it accelerated instead of decelerating.

The researchers propose that if the vehicle provided an explanation, such as “The speed limit is 85 mph, accelerating,” on its dashboard, passengers could intervene to ensure compliance with the actual speed limit. Atakishiyev notes a challenge in determining the right level of information to present to passengers, as preferences vary widely based on factors such as age and technical knowledge.

In addition to immediate feedback, analyzing AV decision-making post-incident can contribute to safety improvements. Atakishiyev’s team conducted simulations where they questioned a deep learning model about its driving decisions. This approach highlighted instances where the model struggled to explain its actions, revealing gaps that need addressing to enhance safety.

Assessing Decision-Making in Autonomous Vehicles

The researchers also advocate for the use of an existing machine learning analysis tool known as SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to evaluate the decision-making of AVs. After a vehicle completes a drive, SHAP can score the features used in its decision-making process. This helps identify which factors significantly influence driving choices and which can be disregarded.

Atakishiyev points out that understanding the intricacies of AV decisions is critical, especially in the context of potential accidents. Questions arise regarding whether a vehicle adhered to traffic regulations during a collision and whether it executed necessary emergency procedures after hitting a pedestrian. Identifying faults in the decision-making process can guide improvements in AV technology.

As the interest in understanding AV decision-making grows, Atakishiyev asserts that incorporating explanations into AV technology is becoming essential. “I would say explanations are becoming an integral component of AV technology,” he states. This focus on transparency will not only enhance public trust but also contribute to safer roads by allowing developers to debug and refine existing systems.
