Avon Eagles Aim for State Title in Historic Match Against Kings

Avon Eagles are set to compete in their first-ever state championship match, facing off against the Kings Mills Kings on November 9, 2023, at 1 p.m. This historic game will take place at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, marking a significant milestone for the team and their supporters.

While Avon’s offense has garnered attention this season, it is their defense that has been pivotal to their success. The Eagles have allowed only two goals throughout the postseason, showcasing their defensive prowess. This strength was evident in their 2-1 overtime victory against Brecksville-Broadview Heights in the state semifinal.

Sophomore Connor Britt, who scored the decisive goal in that match, emphasized the importance of the defense. “I feel like the defense gets overlooked a lot of times because they just don’t really get the glory of having all of the stats and the goals,” Britt said. He acknowledged the defensive unit’s efforts, especially in the second half against Brecksville-Broadview Heights, where they faced intense pressure.

The Eagles managed to maintain a 1-0 lead until late in regulation when a deflected shot resulted in a goal for their opponents. Despite this setback, Avon’s defense remained resolute and effectively contained Brecksville-Broadview Heights during the overtime period, allowing them to regain control and secure their place in the championship.

Avon coach Chris Doré praised the team’s collective effort, highlighting that “defense wins championships.” He noted that each player contributes to the overall success, and a well-rounded unit that supports each other is crucial in high-stakes matches. “The objective for Sunday is to make sure from goalkeeper all the way up to the forwards we’re clicking and everybody’s playing to their capacity,” he added.

The Eagles have demonstrated an impressive trajectory this season, consistently improving and coming together as a cohesive unit. “We’re just moving as one unit,” senior Logan Fitchko remarked. “In the last couple of games, we’ve really stepped it up a level. We’re working for each other, and that’s why we’re winning these games.”

The importance of a strong goalkeeper cannot be overstated, and senior Oliver Dobrovic has proven to be a crucial asset for the Eagles. He acknowledged the increasing pressure as the tournament progresses but feels confident in his abilities. “Everybody looks at you when a goal is scored or a big save. I think I’m getting used to it as we progress in the season,” Dobrovic said, reflecting on the mental fortitude required for his position.

From his unique perspective, Dobrovic highlighted the importance of teamwork and chemistry that has evolved throughout the season. “I’d say our team chemistry from our preseason games to now has been crazy different. We are moving as a whole unit instead of just individuals,” he explained.

As Avon prepares for the championship match, they have already made history as the first team from Lorain County to reach this level. The Eagles have demonstrated that they are not only capable of offensive brilliance but also possess a robust defense that can withstand pressure.

Avon’s path to the finals included decisive victories over Normandy (6-0), North Ridgeville (6-1), Walsh Jesuit (1-0), Avon Lake (3-0), and Brecksville-Broadview Heights (2-1 in overtime). Meanwhile, the Kings Mills Kings have shown their strength by defeating Trenton Edgewood (8-0), Troy (5-1), Harrison (2-0), Cincinnati Anderson (2-0), and Westerville Central (1-0 in overtime).

With the championship match on the horizon, the Eagles are focused and determined to bring home the title. “It’s amazing. Being on this team for four years, this is definitely the best team,” Fitchko said. He expressed his excitement for the opportunity, calling it a “Cinderella story” and the best way to conclude his senior year.

As the Avon Eagles step onto the field at Historic Crew Stadium, they will do so as a united front, ready to seize their moment in history.
