Branson Claims Third MCAL Title in Four Years with 2-0 Victory

The Branson School girls soccer team clinched its third MCAL championship in four years with a decisive 2-0 victory over Redwood High School on March 15, 2024, at San Rafael High. After missing last year’s title game, the Bulls were determined to reclaim their championship status, facing an opponent they have battled intensely over the past five seasons.

In a match that showcased their resilience and teamwork, sophomore striker Luna Diaz opened the scoring in the 49th minute, followed by a crucial goal from senior winger Sophie Arnal in the 72nd minute. This victory not only marked a significant achievement for Branson but also highlighted the team’s consistent performance in the league, with a record of 20-1-2 this season.

“It feels so amazing,” said Branson midfielder Cat Howell. “Our team has been working so hard this entire season, and to see all the work pay off and all the love and support show up in this game is beyond words. I’m so happy.”

The match began with Redwood applying early pressure, creating opportunities within the first few minutes. However, it was Branson’s strategic play that ultimately turned the tide. Diaz’s first goal came after a well-timed play involving teammate Julia Myerberg, who dummied the ball to allow Anya Sridharan to break free down the right. Sridharan’s cross found Diaz, whose initial shot was blocked, but she regrouped quickly to score with a powerful strike into the far corner.

Redwood, known for its competitive spirit, responded with strong attacking plays. In one notable moment during the 62nd minute, Zoe Clark skillfully maneuvered past defenders, only to see her shot hit the crossbar and bounce away. “Zoe beat a couple of players on the dribble and just snuck in right between them and got a great shot off,” commented Branson coach Tyler Gottschalk.

As the game progressed, Arnal solidified Branson’s lead with her goal, marking her third of the week in playoff matches. Gottschalk praised her contributions, stating, “She’s been probably the most influential player in terms of scoring goals down the stretch in the big games.” His tactical decision to move Arnal from a defensive center midfielder to a left winger proved pivotal, allowing her to capitalize on scoring opportunities more effectively.

Branson’s journey to the championship included a series of impressive performances, with Diaz and Arnal combining to score all five of the team’s goals during the playoffs. The team’s ability to adapt and evolve throughout the season has been a hallmark of their success.

The Bulls’ victory added another chapter to their competitive history with Redwood, pushing their postseason record against the Giants to 3-2 over the last five years. Redwood had previously claimed wins in the 2022 final and the 2025 semifinals, but Branson’s recent dominance in finals speaks to their growth and determination as a team.

Looking ahead, Branson’s placement in the North Coast Section will be determined following a seeding meeting, with earlier rankings by MaxPreps.com positioning them fifth in the section. This places them on the cusp of either entering the new Open Division or securing the top seed in Division II. Redwood was also projected to make it into the Division I bracket before the MCAL final.

Both teams’ performances have set the stage for an exciting postseason, with Branson aiming to build on their championship momentum in the upcoming matches.
