The Cleveland Browns have taken a significant step to enhance their offensive line by trading for starting right tackle Tytus Howard from the Houston Texans. The deal, confirmed on March 2, 2026, involves the Browns sending a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to Houston. This strategic move was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Howard, 29, has an impressive record, having started in all 93 games since joining the Texans in 2019. He completed the 2025 season with 16 starts, showcasing his durability and experience. The trade is set to become official when the new league year begins on March 11, 2026.
Strategic Moves Inspired by the Bears
General Manager Andrew Berry indicated at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis that the Chicago Bears’ recent strategy for strengthening their offensive line would serve as a model for the Browns. Following a challenging 2025 season, where the Browns allowed 53 sacks and averaged only 3.9 yards per carry, it became clear that the offensive line required urgent attention.
In contrast, the Bears significantly improved their line last year after quarterback Caleb Williams faced 68 sacks. They acquired players like guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and drafted left tackle Ozzy Trapilo, demonstrating the effectiveness of aggressive roster adjustments.
The Browns face their own set of challenges, as several key players including left tackle Cam Robinson, left guard Joel Bitonio, center Ethan Pocic, right guard Wyatt Teller, and right tackle Jack Conklin are set to become free agents. Bitonio, in particular, is contemplating retirement, which adds another layer of complexity to the team’s offseason decisions.
Looking Ahead
Despite these uncertainties, the acquisition of Howard is a crucial part of the Browns’ strategy to rebuild and strengthen their offensive line. The team plans to extend Howard’s contract for an additional three years at a value of $63 million upon the completion of the trade.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Howard stated in an interview with Houston television station KPRC. “They (the Texans) are trying to get younger and pay some guys. I appreciate the support over the last seven years. I’ll always be a Texan forever, but I’m excited to go to Cleveland and help change the program.”
Selected 23rd overall in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Howard played college football at Alabama State. His experience and skills are expected to provide immediate improvements to a struggling offensive line that produced just ten rushing touchdowns last season.
With the addition of Howard, the Browns now hold nine draft picks, including selections at 6, 24, 39, and 70 overall. This positions them well to continue making impactful changes as they aim for a stronger showing in the upcoming 2026 season.
