In a competitive doubleheader on December 16, 2025, the Colquitt County basketball teams faced off against Dougherty, showcasing a mix of fresh talent and established players. The girls’ team claimed a solid victory, while the boys’ team fought valiantly but ultimately fell short in a close finish.
Girls’ Team Triumphs with Freshman Talent
The Colquitt County girls basketball team, starting four freshmen, secured a 43-29 victory against Dougherty. Despite the inexperience on the court, the Lady Packers demonstrated resilience and teamwork. Head Coach Stephanie Cody praised her players’ ability to rise to the occasion, saying, “We were facing some adversity, but I told them it’s going to happen sometimes on the court and in life.”
Colquitt led by just four points at halftime but surged ahead in the second half, outscoring Dougherty 25-15. Freshman Dyi James emerged as a standout, scoring nine points in her first varsity start. Cody highlighted her work ethic, stating, “She hustles from the time she’s in until the time she leaves.”
Other notable contributions came from twins Kyndall and Kylie Pettis, who scored eight and seven points, respectively. Freshman Tnyha Young added six points off the bench, and junior Aubrey Edge chipped in with five. The Lady Packers now stand at 6-1 and are preparing for a challenging matchup against the undefeated Warner Robins on December 19.
Boys’ Team Battles Hard but Falls to Dougherty
In the boys’ game, Colquitt County faced a tough challenge. After trailing by 12 points early in the fourth quarter, they rallied to narrow the gap to just one point with 48.7 seconds left on the clock. Jalyn Pace played a crucial role in the comeback, scoring back-to-back baskets to bring the Packers within striking distance.
Despite their efforts, Colquitt could not secure the lead. Dougherty’s Mikel Roberts led his team with 16 points and sealed the game with two late free throws, finishing with a score of 63-60. Colquitt’s performance was highlighted by Pace and teammate Cason Harden, who each contributed 17 points. The team now holds a record of 2-5 and will look to improve in upcoming games against Monroe and Lee County at the annual U Save It Classic.
As the Colquitt teams continue their seasons, the blend of youth and experience will be key to navigating upcoming challenges. With a focus on growth and teamwork, both squads are poised to make a significant impact as the season unfolds.
