Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has gained attention in the coaching circuit, securing interviews with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns for their vacant head coaching positions. This development comes as the Chargers are in the process of selecting a new offensive coordinator, with Mike McDaniel still under consideration.
Lynn’s interview with the Browns was anticipated, particularly due to the involvement of Tom Telesco, who served as the Chargers’ general manager when Lynn was hired in 2017 and is currently advising the Browns during their coaching search. The Browns have faced significant scrutiny and challenges in their hiring process, including reports of unconventional candidate assessments.
In contrast, Lynn’s interview with the Bills is somewhat unexpected. The Bills had been pursuing McDaniel for their head coaching vacancy but he canceled a scheduled interview in Florida over the weekend. Lynn’s background as an offensive-minded coach could potentially revitalize the Bills’ offense, which has struggled to perform consistently in the postseason. Previously, Lynn was part of the Bills organization from 2015 to 2016, serving as their offensive coordinator and interim head coach.
The Bills’ interest in Lynn may indicate a desire to explore new strategies to work with quarterback Josh Allen. Lynn brings experience from his time leading the Chargers, where he achieved a 12-win season and a playoff victory in his second year. However, he also faced difficulties, including transitioning from the Philip Rivers era and adapting to the franchise’s move from San Diego to Los Angeles.
After parting ways with the Chargers, Lynn continued his career as an offensive coordinator in Detroit and took on an assistant head coach role in San Francisco. His recent interviews signal a potential return to a head coaching position, as teams recognize his previous successes and experience in the league.
As the search for coaching candidates continues, both the Bills and Browns are evaluating their options carefully, with Lynn emerging as a strong contender in this late stage of the hiring cycle.
