Gisele Thompson of Angel City FC is entering her third professional season with renewed focus and determination as she participates in the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) camp. After making four appearances for the senior national team last season, Thompson aims to enhance her performance ahead of a busy year leading up to the 2026 World Cup.
During a training session at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Tuesday, Thompson expressed her commitment to improving her consistency and durability. “I know the coaches told me that I need durability, especially since there are so many games in such a short period of time,” she said. “Being able to stay on the field and being consistent and confident in myself is essential.”
Preparing for Competitive Challenges
Thompson’s preparation includes a rigorous training regimen that extends beyond the field. “Weight room, nutrition. There’s a lot that goes into it,” she explained. “I’m working closely with a lot of people, and I have such an amazing support team to help me through it.”
Having transitioned to professional soccer at a young age, Thompson acknowledges the learning curve she has experienced. “I’ve learned a lot and learned from different players. This is definitely going to help me through the season,” she noted. As she gears up for the upcoming matches, including an exhibition against Paraguay on January 27, 2026, she is focused on making a significant impact.
Thompson, who opted to go pro rather than attend college following her sister Alyssa‘s path, played 18 games in her rookie NWSL season and increased that number to 23 last year. She recently signed a contract extension with Angel City FC, ensuring her presence with the club through the 2029 season.
Striving for Spot in Competitive Roster
This training camp consists entirely of players from the NWSL, making the competition for roster spots intense. “Everyone’s wanting their spot, so it’s super competitive,” Thompson remarked. “It’s always competitive, no matter where you are, whether at Angel City or in the NWSL; all the teams are competitive.”
As the USWNT prepares for future competitions, including the prestigious SheBelieves Cup in March against teams like Argentina, Colombia, and Canada, players are aware that their performance during this camp is pivotal.
In a related event, U.S. Soccer will celebrate the retirement of Christen Press before the exhibition match against Paraguay. Press retired from professional soccer in October 2023 after an illustrious career, including 155 appearances for the national team and key contributions to the 2015 and 2019 World Cup championships, as well as the bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
As Thompson and her teammates embark on this journey, the excitement builds for what lies ahead in a year filled with opportunities and challenges. With her sights set on growth and consistency, Thompson is poised to make a significant mark in both her club and national team endeavors.
