Montevallo Soccer Aims for Playoff Success as Expectations Rise

Montevallo’s boys soccer team is entering the new season with heightened ambitions, as head coach Garrett Langer sets clear expectations for the Bulldogs: not only qualify for the playoffs but also make a significant impact. After achieving a record of 16 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws last season, the team tied for the most victories in its history, marking a turning point for the program’s competitiveness in Class 5A.

The Bulldogs’ previous campaign showcased their potential, culminating in a second-round playoff exit against Indian Springs, the eventual state runner-up. Langer reflects on that match, noting the missed opportunity. “We felt like if we had been able to pull that one out, we could have made a run to Huntsville,” he said.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, it faces challenges with the graduation of seven seniors. Despite this, Montevallo retains six or seven key starters, ensuring a blend of experience and youthful energy. “We’re a young team this year,” Langer stated, emphasizing that many players have gained valuable game experience, even if they did not start.

The Bulldogs will continue to adopt Langer’s fast-paced playing style. “We’re definitely going to run this year,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of maintaining pressure and movement throughout matches. Junior Arturo Alvarenga echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in their conditioning and training regimen. “There’s a lot of sprints. It’s tough, but it helps us play fast,” he shared.

Strengths and Challenges Ahead

The midfield remains a cornerstone of Montevallo’s strategy, led by junior Alexis Lopez, who has been instrumental in the team’s recent achievements. “Every year, we want to get better and better,” Lopez remarked, reflecting the team’s commitment to continuous improvement. With the departure of last season’s leading scorer, Irving Choto, the Bulldogs will look to broaden their offensive contributions. Langer has high hopes for sophomore Bryan Estrada, who impressed during tryouts and could fill the scoring gap left by Choto.

Defensively, the team must address the loss of significant contributors. Emerging talents like sophomore Dennis Juarez, who stepped up during the playoffs, are expected to play crucial roles. Langer praised Juarez’s performance, particularly after injuries affected the roster last season. “He came on strong for us, especially in the playoffs,” Langer noted.

Junior Jan Carlo Velasco also recognizes Juarez’s potential impact. “I think Dennis is a very good player who’ll do a lot for us this season,” he said. Langer anticipates that Gustavo Garcia will anchor the defense, providing the physical presence needed for success.

The goalkeeping position will be held by senior Erik Angel, who has been a steady force in the net for two seasons. He will be responsible for organizing the youthful defensive unit. “It’s going to be tough, but I can manage that leadership role,” Angel commented, acknowledging the need for communication and teamwork.

Rising Competition in Class 5A

Montevallo’s path to success will not be without challenges. Indian Springs remains a formidable opponent, and both Northside and Shelby County have shown significant improvements in recent years. Langer recognizes the growing competitiveness in the area, stating, “We’re going to have to show up every night.”

Angel expressed particular concern about Northside’s development, indicating that complacency could lead to unexpected setbacks. “They’ve improved so much,” he warned.

As the season approaches, the Bulldogs understand that talent alone will not suffice for a successful playoff run. Execution, leadership, and team chemistry will be vital to their aspirations. Alvarenga encapsulated the team’s mindset: “If we want to make a deep run, every position needs to play their position and play smart throughout the whole game.”

With the foundation laid and expectations firmly established, Montevallo’s soccer program is poised to embrace the challenges ahead, aiming for a deeper playoff journey in this promising season.
