Ravens Outline Offseason Strategy at NFL Scouting Combine

At the NFL Scouting Combine held in Indianapolis, Baltimore Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta and newly appointed Head Coach Jesse Minter detailed the franchise’s strategy for the upcoming offseason. Among the critical topics discussed were the contract situation of quarterback Lamar Jackson, the need to bolster the pass rush, and the commitment to retaining key players like center Tyler Linderbaum.

Contract Negotiations Remain Crucial for Roster Flexibility

As the Ravens prepare for the offseason, Lamar Jackson‘s contract is a central issue affecting the team’s roster flexibility. Projected to carry a significant $74.5 million salary cap hit in 2026, Jackson’s contract ranks as the second-highest in the NFL, following that of the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback, Deshaun Watson.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has expressed a strong desire to keep Jackson in Baltimore, emphasizing the urgency of finalizing negotiations before the free agency period begins on March 9, 2024. “We want another window, and Lamar knows that,” Bisciotti stated, indicating his hope for a resolution that would not drag on as it did previously.

While DeCosta has maintained a degree of confidentiality regarding the negotiations, he confirmed ongoing communication with Jackson, stating, “He’s been very engaged.” Despite the financial implications of Jackson’s impending cap hit, DeCosta reassured fans that the Ravens could still make significant roster improvements.

Focus on Retaining Key Players and Addressing Defensive Gaps

In addition to the Jackson contract, the Ravens are keen on securing the future of center Tyler Linderbaum. DeCosta revealed that the team has extended a “market-setting offer” to Linderbaum, who has emerged as a vital component of the offensive line. “Tyler is a guy that I have tremendous respect for,” DeCosta remarked, highlighting Linderbaum’s importance to the team’s structure.

First-year coach Minter echoed this sentiment, calling Linderbaum “one of the best interior linemen in the league.” With Linderbaum being one of 19 pending free agents, his agent has reportedly received considerable interest from other teams, making it crucial for the Ravens to secure a deal quickly.

The Ravens also face pressing challenges in their pass rush, having recorded only 30 sacks throughout the 2025 season, the third-fewest in the league. DeCosta acknowledged the need for improvement in this area, stating, “We certainly know that we have to augment the pass rush.” The potential loss of defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike, who missed most of the previous season due to injury, adds to the urgency of addressing this need.

With 11 draft picks at their disposal, the Ravens are poised to enhance their defensive front. DeCosta expressed optimism about this year’s draft class, noting its depth in pass rush talent. “We like this draft class in terms of pass rush,” he said, indicating intentions to add impactful players who can contribute immediately.

Strategic Drafting and Versatile Defensive Personnel

The Ravens have long been recognized for their disciplined approach to drafting and player development. DeCosta outlined the organization’s commitment to evaluating prospects based on a combination of traditional scouting and analytical models. “We’re going to rank every single player using analysis, analytics, scouts, interviews, and things like that,” he explained, emphasizing a holistic evaluation process.

Under Minter’s guidance, the Ravens are also expected to emphasize versatility in their secondary. The addition of former Notre Dame cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens as the team’s secondary coach is seen as a significant move. Minter noted, “He’s a really good communicator. He’s a really good evaluator, and he’s a technician.” This shift aims to improve the secondary’s performance, which struggled last season, allowing the second-most passing yards in the league.

As the Ravens navigate the offseason, the interplay between contract negotiations, player retention, and strategic drafting will be critical to their aspirations of reclaiming a competitive edge in the league. With significant decisions on the horizon, the foundation for the team’s future is being laid. The coming weeks will be pivotal as Baltimore works to solidify its roster ahead of the new league year.
