Regina Defeats Anchor Bay; Lutheran North Advances in CHSL Semis

Warren Regina achieved a significant victory on March 14, 2024, defeating Anchor Bay 73-62 in a thrilling non-league basketball matchup. This win marked only the second loss of the season for Anchor Bay, who now holds a record of 16-2. Sophomore guard Emersen Holder led Regina with an impressive performance, scoring 30 points while adding 10 rebounds and six assists.

In addition to Holder’s standout performance, Regina saw contributions from junior Lily Hansen, who scored 16 points, and senior Sam Thomas, who added 15 points. Sophomore forward Jailyn Houth chipped in with 12 points, alongside seven rebounds and four assists. The victory improved Regina’s overall record to 15-5 and showcased their potential as a formidable contender in upcoming matches.

Close Call for Lutheran North in CHSL Semifinals

In a nail-biting contest, Macomb Lutheran North edged out Allen Park Cabrini 55-54 in the Catholic High School League (CHSL) semifinals. The game came down to the final 1.5 seconds, with Cabrini gaining possession under their own basket. However, a strong defensive effort from Lutheran North resulted in a jump ball, allowing the Mustangs to run out the clock and secure their spot in the championship.

Freshman Sammy VanSteenkiste led the way for the Mustangs with 16 points, while freshman Amanda Kress contributed 15 points. Junior Leighton Garner not only scored 15 points but also recorded 18 rebounds, marking another double-double performance. The Mustangs will now face Wixom St Catherine in the Catholic League championship on March 16, 2024, at 20:00 at Madonna University.

Other notable games included a close matchup where Grosse Pointe North narrowly defeated Port Huron 46-44. Eva Borowski led Grosse Pointe with 30 points, propelling her team to a much-needed win as they improved their overall record to 9-9.

In the MAC Blue Division, Fraser extended their winning streak to 15 games with a decisive 58-42 victory over Utica. Senior forward Brynn Norbeck scored 17 points, while senior guard Francesca Sines added 12 points. This victory secured the conference title for Fraser, who finished the season with a record of 17-2, including an undefeated league standing at 8-0.

Marysville also recorded a strong performance, defeating St. Clair Shores South Lake 53-34. Kendal Quain led all scorers with 26 points, helping Marysville maintain their second-place position in the MAC Blue Division.
