Texas A&M Secures Offensive Line Depth with Transfer Coen Echols

The Texas A&M Aggies are undergoing significant changes to their offensive line ahead of the 2026 season. Following the declaration of four key players for the 2026 NFL Draft, including left tackle Trey Zuhn and left guard Chase Bisontis, head coach Mike Elko has actively sought to fortify the team through the transfer portal. Among the new additions is Coen Echols, previously a starter at LSU.

Echols, a former three-star recruit from Katy, Texas, initially committed to Texas A&M in the 2023 recruiting class. However, following the firing of former head coach Jimbo Fisher, he reopened his recruitment and ultimately joined LSU shortly after Elko’s appointment. During his time with the Tigers, Echols secured the starting left guard position in his sophomore season, playing a total of 637 snaps.

In terms of performance, Echols stood out as one of LSU’s top pass protectors, achieving a Pro Football Focus Pass Pro grade of 68.3. While his run-blocking metrics were less impressive at 49.7, his effectiveness in pass protection was notable, especially given LSU’s challenges in the run game last season.

Position Versatility Enhances Team Depth

As Echols transitions to Texas A&M, he is expected to replace Bisontis at left guard. During a recent interview with former Ole Miss defensive tackle Jon Seaton, Echols highlighted his adaptability, revealing that he can play both offensive guard and center. This versatility could provide crucial depth to the offensive line, an area critical for the team’s success.

Entering the 2026 season, senior Mark Nabou is projected to retain his role as the starting center. Sophomore Ashton Funk is emerging as a significant contender for the backup position, while redshirt sophomore Blake Ivy is also in contention for a starting role at either guard spot.

This recruitment marks a strategic move by Elko to rebuild the offensive line after losing substantial talent to the NFL Draft. The addition of Echols not only fills an immediate need but also brings a level of flexibility that could prove invaluable as the team looks to strengthen its performance in the upcoming season. The Aggies’ ability to adapt to these changes will be closely monitored as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
