In a remarkable moment for high school athletics, junior volleyball player Sophee Peterson from Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas, was awarded the 2025-2026 Gatorade National Girls Volleyball Player of the Year on March 15, 2024. The surprise announcement came as she entered the gymnasium, where she was greeted by a crowd, including three-time Olympic medalist April Ross.
This accolade follows Peterson’s recent recognition as the 2025-2026 Texas Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year. Her contributions on the court have been pivotal in leading the Byron Nelson Bobcats to consecutive UIL Class 6A Division I state championships, culminating in a perfect season with a record of 42-0 in 2025. The team finished ranked No. 1 in the nation according to Sports Illustrated’s final rankings.
A Historic Achievement
Peterson’s statistics from the season underscore her impact: she recorded 1,459 assists, 274 digs, 161 kills, and 70 blocks, averaging 13.9 assists per set. These impressive numbers contributed to a championship run that saw the Bobcats become the first team in Texas history to secure back-to-back 6A titles.
With this latest honor, Peterson becomes just the 50th non-senior to receive the Gatorade National Player of the Year award since the program’s inception 41 years ago, making her the second volleyball player to earn this distinction before her senior year. “Joining the elite group of Gatorade Player of the Year alumni means being part of a community of athletes who have gone on to define their sports,” said Jennifer Schmit, Senior Director for Gatorade Brand Marketing. “Sophee has proven that she belongs in this group of greats, and we can’t wait to watch her continue on to greatness in the years to come.”
Joining Elite Company
Past recipients of the Gatorade National Player of the Year award include legendary figures such as Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Alex Rodriguez. Gatorade alumni have collectively won 91 Olympic gold medals and 13 national championships, highlighting the significance of this recognition.
Peterson’s remarkable achievements extend beyond the volleyball court. She holds a 4.64 weighted GPA and is part of Byron Nelson’s BioMedical Academy, having earned her “white coat” distinction this year. Furthermore, she actively contributes to her community by leading programs at the Byron Nelson Youth Volleyball Camp, demonstrating her commitment to both academics and athletics.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually honors one winner from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., across 12 sports. From these state winners, one national player of the year is selected in each sport, making Peterson’s achievement all the more notable.
As she continues her journey, Peterson’s trajectory in both volleyball and academics positions her as a rising star in the world of sports, inspiring her teammates and young athletes across the nation.
