PITTSBURGH — Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers expressed optimism regarding wide receiver DK Metcalf‘s availability for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on December 17, 2023. Metcalf’s recent hospital visit and overnight stay in Baltimore following a victory have raised questions, but Tomlin reassured fans during his weekly press conference that the situation is under control.
“He’s moving in the right direction,” Tomlin stated. “I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all, but it certainly may jeopardize his availability at the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint.” He emphasized gratitude towards the medical staff for their swift actions in ensuring Metcalf’s safety.
During the Steelers’ 27-22 win over the Dolphins, Metcalf achieved a season-high of 148 yards on seven receptions. However, he reported stomach pains after the game, leading medical personnel to remove him from the team flight. Following this, he was taken to a local hospital where he stayed overnight before returning to Pittsburgh on Monday.
“He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game,” Tomlin explained. “They gave him some basic over-the-counter remedies in-game like Pepto-Bismol, and it got progressively worse after the game. We exercised an abundance of caution and wanted to ensure he was safe before flying.”
Injury Concerns Among Steelers Players
While Metcalf’s status seems promising, several other key players are facing uncertainties due to injuries. Three Steelers — tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison — are currently in the concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre (calf) and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (ankle) may be limited in practice due to injuries sustained during the game.
Tomlin also mentioned that safety Kyle Dugger (hand) has “a chance” to play after missing the previous game. The situation with first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon (knee), who has missed the last two games, remains uncertain, with Tomlin indicating that Harmon’s participation in practice will determine his availability.
With injuries accumulating and an extra preparation day before the Monday Night Football match, Tomlin decided to grant the Steelers (7-6) an off day on Wednesday. “We deemed it appropriate to give ourselves an additional 24 hours of recovery this week,” he said. “We’ll give guys some additional time to rest and recuperate.”
The Steelers are gearing up for a crucial matchup against a Dolphins defense that has allowed an average of just 13.3 points per game over their last four victories. As the team resumes practice on Thursday, all eyes will be on Metcalf and his recovery as they aim to secure their playoff aspirations.
