The only survivor of a devastating family shooting in West Valley, Utah, has died unexpectedly at the age of 19. Sha Reh passed away on Sunday at the home of his aunt and uncle, as confirmed by a family statement. In December 2024, Reh was shot in the head during a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of his parents and three siblings.
Authorities believe that Reh’s father, Dae Rah, 42, shot his wife, Bu Meh, 38, and their four children before taking his own life. Sha Reh was discovered critically injured in the garage two days after the shooting, following a welfare check at the family home. The family statement noted that Reh’s death was unexpected, and a GoFundMe account indicates that he died of natural causes.
Reh’s passing comes shortly after he achieved a personal milestone by enrolling at the University of Utah. Just a week prior, he began his journey as a first-year college student, overcoming significant challenges since the shooting.
A Journey of Resilience and Hope
Despite losing his vision in both eyes, Reh remained determined to pursue his education. Over the past 13 months, he made remarkable progress in adapting to his new life. He enrolled in the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind in January 2025, where he learned to communicate in Braille and acquire skills for independent living.
Reh graduated from Granger High School in May 2025, with school officials describing his survival as “one of the most fabulous miracles of the season.” During an interview with KSL in May, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had. “I strive to do good things in this world,” he said. “I am very grateful and blessed to have this opportunity to be happy.”
Reh’s faith played a significant role in his resilience. He and his family were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints nearly a decade ago. He remarked on the positive impact of his religion, stating, “It gets me thinking that I will be able to see my family again in the afterlife.”
Family Tributes and Community Support
Following his death, Reh’s family released a heartfelt statement. “While we are devastated at the news of his death, the knowledge of the joy of his reunion with his family exceeds our pain,” they said. The family expressed their belief that Reh has now found peace with his loved ones, including his siblings, Boe Reh, 11; Kristina Ree, 8; and Nyay Meh, 2.
The family also extended their gratitude to first responders, law enforcement, and the medical examiner’s office for their support following the traumatic events of December 2024. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Reh’s extended family, who have been caring for him. The family is currently facing significant financial hardship, struggling to cover funeral and memorial service costs.
As the community mourns the loss of a young man who demonstrated incredible strength and hope, Sha Reh’s story continues to resonate. His journey serves as a testament to resilience amid unimaginable hardship.
