Tyler Seguin Faces Season-Ending Injury After ACL Tear

Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin is likely to miss the remainder of the NHL season following a torn ACL in his right knee. The injury occurred during a game against the New York Rangers on February 13, 2024, when Seguin collided with Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Coach Glen Gulutzan confirmed the severity of the situation, stating that Seguin would be out for a significant period.

The incident unfolded in the first period, as Seguin and Gavrikov became entangled along the boards. Seguin fell to the ice in visible pain and was unable to skate off, requiring assistance from teammates and an athletic trainer to reach the locker room at Madison Square Garden. After further evaluation, the team received disappointing news regarding the extent of Seguin’s injury.

“It’s a tough day for us today with the news,” Gulutzan remarked. “Other guys now have to step in and play.” The coach acknowledged the growing list of injuries affecting the team but emphasized the need for the remaining players to step up in Seguin’s absence. “It’s next guy up, next guy’s opportunity, and run with it,” he added.

This injury marks another setback for Seguin, who had previously missed most of the last season due to hip surgery. He returned in time for the playoffs, where the Stars advanced to the Western Conference final. Having joined the Stars in a trade from Boston in 2013, Seguin has been a pivotal player for the team.

Gulutzan expressed admiration for Seguin’s leadership, noting the hard work he put into returning last season. “He’s a great leader for us, and he’s a great pro,” he said. “I’ve been most impressed with his leadership ability.”

In the wake of Seguin’s injury, Nathan Bastian is expected to fill his spot in the lineup for the next game against the New Jersey Devils. Looking ahead, the team is hopeful that center Matt Duchene will return from his own injury soon, which could help alleviate the pressure on the roster. “If Duchy comes back, he’s going to have to take some of that,” Gulutzan noted about the added responsibilities for other players.

As the Stars prepare to face the challenges ahead, Gulutzan emphasized the importance of resilience within the team. “You’re going to have to have other guys step up,” he said, highlighting the opportunities that arise from such misfortunes. The coming weeks will reveal which players seize their chance to make an impact on the ice.
