In an exciting conclusion to the Big Island Classic, the Wingate Bulldogs defeated the UH Hilo Vulcans 64-56 on March 5, 2024, at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo. The Bulldogs rallied from a two-point deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring UH Hilo by ten points to secure their victory.

Entering the final quarter with a narrow lead of 46-44, the Vulcans looked poised to maintain their advantage. However, Wingate’s Laura Montiel changed the momentum with a crucial layup that put the Bulldogs ahead 52-50. From that point forward, the teams exchanged baskets, but the Bulldogs ultimately took control when Montiel converted a free throw with just 3:40 remaining, establishing a lead they would not relinquish.

Kyleigh Bacon led all players with an impressive performance, scoring 23 points and securing eight rebounds. Montiel contributed significantly as well, adding 11 points, making her the only other Bulldog to reach double figures in scoring. The Vulcans were led by Keirstyn Agonias, who scored 14 points, while teammates Brooke Samura and KeanuMarie Huihui each contributed 12 points to the effort.
