BREAKING: Fifteen-year-old Bentley Lane from Hartland achieved a remarkable milestone on Saturday, October 14, 2023, when he harvested a stunning 233-pound, 8-point buck during a family hunting trip. This momentous event unfolded on the family’s property just after sunrise, showcasing the deep-seated traditions of hunting that bond families together.
While hunting with his father Ray Lane, Bentley spotted the deer on the southeast side of the field. Using a Browning A-Bolt .30-06 rifle that belonged to his grandfather, Bentley remained calm and focused. With precision, he used two grunt calls to stop the buck, firing a single shot, then a second as the deer bounded toward the woods.
After a short walk, Bentley and his father discovered the deer about 25 yards from the field’s edge. “He was patient, calm and confident,” said Ray Lane. “That’s what hunting’s all about — family, tradition and spending time together outdoors.”
The celebration continued as Bentley’s mother and a family friend joined them. After field dressing the deer, they played their traditional “guess the weight” game, ultimately confirming the buck’s weight at 233 pounds at the Newport Trading Post. This was Bentley’s eighth deer and one of his largest, marking a significant achievement in his young hunting career.
For Bentley, this hunt was not just about the size of the buck but the emotional significance of using his grandfather’s rifle. “Sharing this moment with family made it a day we will all remember,” he expressed, highlighting the bond created through this experience.
