In total, 13 confirmed deaths were recorded, including six crew members aboard the ill-fated fishing vessel Andrea Gail, which was returning to Gloucester when it sank. The boat’s tragic fate was immortalized in Sebastian Junger’s book and subsequent film adaptation, raising awareness of the storm’s deadly nature.
The storm’s wrath was felt keenly as high winds and coastal flooding wreaked havoc, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. Over 38,000 people were left without power as gusts swirled along the shoreline. Wankum noted, “For years it was a recommended book for students.
