UPDATE: The Chicago Bears’ playoff ambitions have ignited a shopping frenzy for team merchandise, with sales spiking 41% at local retailers. This dramatic surge comes on the heels of the Bears’ thrilling victory against the Green Bay Packers last week, marking their first playoff run since January 2021.
At Clark Street Sports, which operates eight locations across the Chicago area, co-owner Jason Caref reported an undeniable boom in sales, especially following the recent win. “Christmas came early for our company this year,” Caref stated. The uptick is evident as fans flock to stores, with parking spots vanishing at their busiest location in Albany Park, 4506 W. Lawrence Ave. Store manager Fatima Reynoso noted it’s the busiest week she has experienced in four years.
On the ground, fans are eager to show their support. Camilo Cumpian was spotted purchasing a Bears hat for his son, a nod to the iconic Super Bowl XX victory in 1986. “If we’re lucky, history will repeat itself,” he remarked, showcasing the emotional connection fans have with the team’s legacy.
Demand is also soaring at Wrigleyville Sports, located at 959 W. Addison St., where general manager Devin Carlstrom described sales as “crazy.” Popular items include T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring coach Ben Johnson’s slogan “Good, Better, Best.” “Anything with the Bears,” Carlstrom added, highlighting the fervor among fans.
The Bears’ winning streak has provided a much-needed boost to small businesses, many of which have faced challenges from inflation and tariffs this year. Caref explained, “It’s a challenge to buy merch for teams that are not performing well.” However, this season marks a turnaround, with both the Bears and Cubs making headlines.
Local fans are eager to invest in team gear. Addam Haynes, visiting Clark Street Sports, expressed his excitement following the team’s latest win. “You’re always nervous when you’re a Bears fan,” he said, emphasizing the communal spirit that comes with supporting a winning team.
New merchandise, including jerseys for rising stars like running back Kyle Monangai and tight end Colston Loveland, are flying off the shelves, with prices ranging from $130 to $175. “We can’t keep it in stock,” Caref noted, reflecting the high demand among fans.
As temperatures drop, winter gear such as hats, gloves, and scarves adorned with Bears branding are also selling rapidly. Clark Street Sports is poised to release new merchandise declaring the Bears as division champions, contingent on their continued success. Caref remains optimistic, stating, “As soon as they win, we can sell it.”
The atmosphere in local bars and stores has transformed as fans celebrate the Bears’ resurgence. Associate Wes Nunez shared his experiences with enthusiastic customers, remarking on the electric energy in the city. “Football is more than a game,” he said. “It brings the community together. Everyone is proud to be a Chicagoan now.”
As the Bears prepare for the playoffs, the excitement in Chicago is palpable. With fans eager to support their team, local retailers are experiencing a surge that promises to boost their bottom lines significantly. Stay tuned for updates as the playoffs approach and the Bears aim to continue their winning streak.
