Boston Police Seize 2+ kg of Fentanyl, Arrest 5 in Major Drug Bust

UPDATE: Boston Police have just announced a significant drug bust, seizing over two kilograms of fentanyl and arresting five individuals in the Southwest Corridor area. This operation, driven by community complaints regarding escalating drug activity, underscores the ongoing crisis in Boston amidst the fallout from the Mass and Cass tent-city closure.

The coordinated law enforcement effort, which took place on October 28, 2023, involved multiple units from the Boston Police Department, including the Youth Violence Strike Force, as well as partners from the Massachusetts State Police, MBTA Police, and Boston Housing Authority Police. Authorities executed search warrants at various locations, including 176 Stratton St. in Dorchester and 127 Hazelton St. in Mattapan, revealing a concerning cache of illegal substances and paraphernalia.

As police stated, “As a result of the coordinated operation, officers seized more than two kilograms of fentanyl, thirty-two rounds of ammunition, digital scales, drug packaging materials, and over $3,000 in U.S. currency.” The operation highlights the urgent need to address the rising drug crisis that has plagued Boston neighborhoods, particularly following the dismantling of the open-air drug market at Mass and Cass.

Among those arrested are Ricky Wilson Soto-Arias, 36, and Doris Baez, 37, both from Dorchester and Mattapan, respectively. They, along with Bryan Mejia, 31; Jeil Hernandez, 44; and Stephen Smith, 37, face serious charges. Except for Smith, all were charged with trafficking Class A drugs, with Soto-Arias and Baez additionally charged with unlawful possession of ammunition. Smith faces separate charges regarding breaking and entering and larceny.

The community’s outcry has been palpable, as residents express growing fears over safety and the escalating drug activities in their neighborhoods. The aftermath of this significant bust raises questions about the effectiveness of current measures to combat the opioid crisis that has deeply affected Boston.

As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to local authorities. Boston Police continue to prioritize public safety and drug enforcement, aiming to reclaim neighborhoods from the grip of addiction and trafficking.
