Byron Nelson’s Brianne Groth Pursues History Amid Pregnancy

UPDATE: Byron Nelson head volleyball coach Brianne Groth is on the brink of making history, aiming to secure back-to-back state championships while juggling her demanding career and a pregnancy with twins. With only two weeks left in the season, Groth’s team has a remarkable 319-52 career record and is striving to become just the second Texas volleyball team to achieve this feat while losing only one match.

At 36 weeks pregnant and already a mother of two boys, Groth’s commitment is unwavering despite the physical challenges she faces. “I’m thankful the athletic director let me borrow a rolling stool to coach, but I’d prefer to stand,” she said, emphasizing her dedication to the game. The dual pressures of coaching and pregnancy have forced her to take brief naps during lunch just to keep up with her responsibilities.

Groth’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Just three years ago, she grappled with personal and professional challenges that left her questioning her future in volleyball. “I considered stepping away from volleyball altogether,” Groth reflected. However, her love for the sport and the support of her family, including her mother, Jan Barker, a legendary figure in Texas high school volleyball, pushed her to persevere.

As Groth prepares her team for the upcoming matches, she is mindful of the lessons her experiences have taught her. “I’m learning that volleyball is not who I am; it’s what I do,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to developing her players both on and off the court. This shift in perspective has allowed her to focus on nurturing her team while managing her own journey into motherhood again.

Despite the joy of impending twins, Groth’s coaching position has faced scrutiny. Last season, accusations of misconduct led to an investigation by Northwest ISD, which ultimately found no evidence against her. “People who don’t even know you try to ruin your reputation,” Groth said, reflecting on the challenges she faced. This adversity has only strengthened her resolve and her connection with her players.

Groth’s team, fueled by her tenacity and resilience, has embraced a more dynamic approach on the court. She is allowing her players to engage more with the game, encouraging them to think critically and enjoy the sport. “I’m trying to see the entirety of my players and let them see more of myself,” Groth explained.

Looking ahead, the next two weeks will be critical for Groth and her team as they pursue their championship goal. The emotional weight of her journey and the excitement of her upcoming family addition create a unique blend of challenges and triumphs. With Groth at the helm, Byron Nelson is not just chasing titles; they are setting an example of strength and determination in the face of adversity.

As the season unfolds, Groth remains focused on what lies ahead, ready to embrace whatever comes next, both in volleyball and motherhood.
