UPDATE: Cheryl Jean Husby, a beloved figure in the Duluth community, has passed away at the age of 76. She died peacefully on October 14, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. The news of her passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from friends and community members who cherished her vibrant spirit.
Born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis, Cheryl was known for her artistic talents and deep commitment to community service. She graduated from U-High in 1966 and later pursued higher education, earning her B.F.A. in 1983, an M.A. in 1984, and an M.F.A. in 1986 from prestigious institutions including the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Cheryl’s passion for life was reflected in her diverse interests, from harvesting wild rice and running sled dogs to baking bread over a wood stove. She and her husband, Bob Husby, shared a creative life together, famously living above a bakery as they launched their pottery business, Husby Pottery. The couple created lasting memories while traveling across the country, including annual stays in the Florida Keys.
Cheryl was also a dedicated community member, serving on boards for the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Her artistic contributions earned her numerous accolades, including 1st place in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival. Her legacy is one of joy, creativity, and a strong commitment to family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bob, along with her son, Seth (Tracy) Draper; daughter, Elissa Husby; grandsons, Zane and Noah Draper; and siblings, Barbara Swango, JoAnn (Mike) Mancuso, and George (Mary) Chergosky. Her family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the care teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, and others who supported Cheryl in her final days.
Visitation is scheduled for 10:00 AM on November 5 at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM and a reception. The family invites those who wish to honor Cheryl’s memory to contribute flowers or make donations to the Depot Foundation and Duluth Preservation Alliance.
