URGENT UPDATE: Over 150 girls gathered at the Pullman Community Center in Chicago this morning for a groundbreaking flag football camp dedicated exclusively to young female athletes. The Concrete Rose 773 nonprofit is on a mission to empower girls through sports, mentorship, and life skills.
The Concrete Rose 773 flag football camp, held on October 14, 2023, is designed to foster connection and build confidence among participants. “Flag football is one of the more growing sports,” said Darrin Cotton Jr., founder and executive director of the organization. “So definitely, some of these girls got real skills.”
This annual event, now in its second year, attracts young players from diverse backgrounds across the Chicagoland area and even Wisconsin. Participants, ranging from beginners to experienced athletes, engage in a series of drills focused on essential skills like catching and tackling.
“I just think females can do anything,” said Anya Holt, a participant who recently received four college offers to play football. “It’s a way to be stronger, it helps you stay in shape. It keeps you mentally there.”
The camp not only emphasizes athletic skills but also instills critical life lessons. “We teach them about teamwork, taking coaching, and understanding the fundamentals that translate outside of the playing area,” Cotton Jr. explained.
Participants like Molly O’Hara express excitement about the opportunity to improve their game while forming lasting relationships. “I love the station work we get to work on individual skills, defense, offense,” she said. “I am meeting so many new people, and I think that is so important for growing in the game.”
As the event unfolds, the impact on these young girls is evident, highlighting the importance of female representation in sports. The camp aims to empower attendees to pursue their athletic dreams, potentially at the collegiate level.
For many, this camp is more than just a chance to play football; it’s about building confidence and community. As the day progresses, the energy at the Pullman Community Center continues to surge, with young athletes eager to learn and grow.
Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring event as it continues to transform lives through sports.
