UPDATE: Kindred Motorworks has launched a revolutionary approach to classic car restoration, transforming iconic vehicles like the Ford Bronco into modern electric cars. Based in a historic facility on Mare Island, California, the company is making headlines by delivering fully rebuilt vehicles designed for today’s performance and safety standards.
Just announced, Kindred Motorworks is not just restoring classic cars; it is redefining the process with a focus on efficiency and quality. Founded by Rob Howard, a technology veteran, the company combines traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing principles to produce electric and gasoline-powered Broncos. The gas version starts at $199,000, while the electric model begins at $225,000.
This innovative factory, spanning 105,000 square feet, opened its doors in February 2023, and has already delivered its first vehicle. With an aim to produce up to one vehicle per week, Kindred is on track to revolutionize the classic car market, which is seeing a surge in demand for restomods—vehicles restored and upgraded with modern features.
According to a recent study by the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA), over 9.4 million pre-1990 vehicles are still on the road in the United States, indicating a ripe market for Kindred’s offerings. The company’s unique approach utilizes proprietary technology, allowing it to streamline the restoration process, cutting labor hours from over 2,000 to approximately 1,100 per vehicle.
“Our goal is to maintain true craftsmanship while enhancing efficiency,” said Howard. The vehicles feature a proprietary EV platform called “Grayback,” which offers a 200-mile range and fast charging capabilities, allowing for quick recharges in just 25 minutes.
Celebrity interest has also surged, with actor Robert Downey Jr. investing in Kindred’s mission to electrify classic cars. The company has raised nearly $50 million from various investors, supporting its ambitious plans for expansion, including the upcoming launch of a modernized Volkswagen Bus in 2026.
As Kindred Motorworks scales its operations, it is also committed to building a skilled workforce. Currently employing around 100 people, the company plans to hire an additional 50 to 60 employees to meet production demands. The hiring strategy focuses on attracting experienced professionals from both traditional restoration shops and tech firms, ensuring a blend of expertise and innovation.
The excitement surrounding Kindred’s work is palpable, both in the automotive community and among consumers eager for updated classics. As the demand for low-emission vehicles grows, Kindred’s blend of technology, craftsmanship, and sustainability sets it apart in an increasingly competitive market.
With the classic car restoration industry evolving rapidly, Kindred Motorworks stands at the forefront, poised to capture the hearts of enthusiasts while embracing the future of automotive technology. Keep an eye on this innovative company as it continues to roll out groundbreaking vehicles that honor the past while driving into the electric future.
