Couple Turns Dream into Reality: Off-Grid Living in WA

UPDATE: A couple has turned their dream of owning a vacation home into a reality by purchasing land and a trailer in Washington’s Pacific Northwest. Sally Marks and her partner Carol found a creative solution to rising housing prices, embracing the off-grid lifestyle and living in nature for several months each year.

After falling in love with the Olympic Peninsula during a vacation in 2010, the duo envisioned a summer retreat in the idyllic town of Port Townsend. However, escalating real estate prices, with many homes exceeding $500,000, made their dream appear financially unattainable.

In a surprising turn, their real estate agent presented them with a listing for a 4.6-acre wooded lot approximately 30 minutes from Port Townsend. The property lacked basic utilities but offered a scenic landscape and good connectivity. Marks and Carol seized the opportunity and purchased the land for $160,000 in 2022, sight unseen.

Embracing a sustainable lifestyle, they ordered a 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 to serve as their living space. To navigate the challenges of off-grid living, they installed portable solar panels, collected rainwater for non-potable uses, and sourced drinking water from a facility 5 miles away.

“Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure, but we don’t regret our decision,” Marks said. They creatively adapted their living arrangements to include an outdoor tent, which serves as an additional dining and rehearsal space for Carol’s local band.

Despite the challenges, the couple enjoys the beauty of the Pacific Northwest for three to five months each year, returning to their on-grid home in Arizona when winter arrives. They prepare their property for the colder months by maintaining their equipment and ensuring the area is ready for the next season.

This story of resilience and adaptability highlights the growing trend of alternative living solutions in response to soaring real estate markets. As more people seek affordable ways to connect with nature, Marks and Carol’s journey serves as inspiration for those dreaming of a home in the great outdoors.

The couple’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and creativity in achieving one’s dreams, even in the face of financial obstacles. Their experience resonates with many who are navigating the challenges of the current housing market.
