Despite the overwhelming shots against them, the game remained competitive until late in the third period. With just 1:57 left on the clock, Lyndi Schubert scored for CSS, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. However, an empty-net goal from UW-Eau Claire sealed the Saints’ fate.
Makenzie Cole, the Saints’ goalie, made an impressive 40 saves during the match, but it was not enough to secure a victory. With this loss, the Saints’ record now stands at 3-5-1.
The Saints are set to return to action as they prepare for a pivotal home-and-home series against Hamline starting on Friday in Duluth. These upcoming games will be crucial as CSS looks to improve their standing in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In men’s hockey, St. Scholastica also faced challenges, concluding their participation in the Superior Showdown without a win. They suffered a 5-0 loss to Lawrence on December 1 and a 5-2 defeat against Wisconsin-Superior on December 2.
On Friday, Lawrence’s goalie, Owen Carlson, shut out the Saints, who managed only 26 shots on goal. Saturday’s matchup saw CSS rally with goals from Evan Pahos and Luke McCarthy, but they were ultimately outscored by UWS, who netted three unanswered goals.
With their record also at 3-5-1, the men’s team will look to regroup as they head into their next game against Hamline on Friday, marking their final series of the calendar year.
The urgency of these upcoming games cannot be overstated, as both teams are eager to turn their fortunes around. Fans are encouraged to support the Saints as they strive for victory in their next matchups.
