Delaware County Marks New Year with Historic Milestones

UPDATE: Delaware County is reflecting on key historical milestones today, January 1, as it marks significant events from the past century. From highway expansions to personal celebrations, these developments showcase the region’s enduring spirit.

100 Years Ago, 1926: The State Highway Department is set to advance construction on Chester Pike, a critical route for Pennsylvania. Officials are preparing to advertise for bids to reconstruct 22,670 linear feet of reinforced concrete pavement, spanning 20 feet wide across Upper Darby, Springfield, Nether Providence townships, and the boroughs of Swarthmore, Clifton Heights, and Media. This project is expected to enhance one of the state’s busiest roadways, designated as Route 130.

75 Years Ago, 1951: As the world grapples with renewed conflict, Delaware County’s industrial sector is poised for a significant uptick in productivity. The Chester Times conducted a survey indicating that the county, known as the “arsenal of America” during both World Wars, is gearing up to support the U.S. rearmament efforts.

50 Years Ago, 1976: Residents of Swarthmore celebrated the beginning of America’s 200th birthday year with raucous festivities. A New Year’s Eve party hosted by Councilman and Mrs. G. West Cochrane featured liberty bells ringing at midnight, marking a joyful start to a momentous year.

25 Years Ago, 2001: In a pivotal meeting, Ridley Park Borough Council approved a budget of $2,912,118, reflecting a 3.4 percent increase over the previous year. Despite a drop in assessed property values by $4.5 million, the borough expects to see revenue growth from real estate transfer taxes and increased building permits.

10 Years Ago, 2016: New Year’s Day brought joy to Alfred Kirkland as he welcomed his daughter, Mikayla Yvette, into the world at 12:40 a.m. at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill. Weighing just 5 pounds and measuring 18 inches, Mikayla was recognized as Delaware County’s first baby born in the new year, a moment of pride for the Kirkland family.
