Delaware DA Charges Opioid Advocate with Human Trafficking

BREAKING: Lawrence Arata, the executive director of the Opioid Crisis Action Network, has been charged with serious offenses, including human trafficking and obstruction of justice. The Delaware County District Attorney, Jack Stollsteimer, made the shocking announcement today, revealing that Arata allegedly exploited opioid settlement funds to coerce sexual favors from vulnerable women battling addiction.

Arata, aged 65, turned himself in Wednesday to authorities and has posted bail. This urgent investigation began after multiple complaints led to a thorough probe by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Delaware County DA’s office, in conjunction with the Upper Darby Police Department.

“Our investigation concluded that Larry Arata cynically and cruelly misused those funds as leverage to satisfy his sexual desires,” stated Stollsteimer. The allegations claim that Arata received sexual favors from clients in recovery in exchange for essential benefits, including meal credits, gift cards, and rental assistance.

The Opioid Crisis Action Network, founded by Arata and his wife in 2018, was initially established to provide treatment and housing for individuals suffering from substance use disorders. The organization had received significant funds from both local and state opioid settlement initiatives.

Witness accounts in the affidavit detail how Arata reportedly committed these acts at various hotels across Delaware County, raising concerns that there could be more victims of his predatory behavior. “I would encourage anyone with more information to contact my Office or reach out to the Victim’s Assistance Center of Delaware County to have your voice heard,” Stollsteimer urged.

Lawrence Arata’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 27, as the community grapples with the implications of these serious charges. The Opioid Crisis Action Network has not yet responded to requests for comment.

This disturbing case sheds light on the exploitation of vulnerable populations and underscores the need for accountability within organizations meant to support those in crisis. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are calling for anyone with additional information to come forward.
