El Cajon Standoff Ends with Arrest of Suspect on Felony Charges

UPDATE: A dramatic standoff in El Cajon has ended with the arrest of Ruben Castro, a 44-year-old man, on multiple felony charges, including domestic violence. The tense situation unfolded on July 15, 2023, at approximately 3:00 PM at a motel located at 1368 E. Main Street, as police responded to a distress call from a woman reporting an assault.

Authorities report that the woman alleged Castro had assaulted and strangled her, restricting her movement within their motel room. Quick action by the El Cajon Police Department led to her safe evacuation. However, Castro barricaded himself inside the room, prompting police to initiate crisis negotiation efforts.

Despite attempts to communicate, Castro refused to engage with officers, increasing the urgency of the situation. He was later confirmed to be wanted for an existing felony warrant related to prior violent offenses and sex registration violations. In response, the El Cajon Police SWAT team was deployed to handle the escalating standoff.

Initial measures, including the use of less-lethal Pepper Ball rounds, failed to coax Castro out. Officers utilized a flashbang device combined with additional rounds, ultimately compelling him to exit the bathroom where he was holed up. He surrendered without further incident.

Castro was taken into custody and booked into the San Diego County Jail on charges stemming from today’s events, along with the outstanding felony warrant. This incident highlights the critical work of local law enforcement in managing domestic violence situations and ensuring community safety.

Residents and local advocates are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected domestic violence immediately. The El Cajon Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and is providing support to the victim.
