UPDATE: El Paso Community College (EPCC) is celebrating the graduation of 22-year-old Alba Lucía Quintero García today, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey. The talented international student from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico will receive her Associate of Arts in Dance, showcasing her incredible determination and resilience.
Alba’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Overcoming the challenges of studying abroad, she has become a prominent figure among her peers at EPCC. Her passion for dance began as a therapeutic outlet for childhood hyperactivity and has evolved into a lifelong commitment. “Dancing means that no matter where I am, I will always have that comfort with me,” Alba expressed in an interview with EPCC News.
Her dedication is reflected in her rigorous schedule. Alba commutes across the border twice a week to attend 6:00 a.m. cheer practices, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her craft and education. In addition to her studies, she has taken on leadership roles, including serving as president of the Dance Club and competing in collegiate Speech and Debate tournaments as far as San Diego, California.
Leonor Forrestal, assistant coach of the EPCC Spirit Squad, commended Alba for her remarkable work ethic, stating,
“Alba’s resilience, passion for performance, and exceptional work ethic make her a standout student and a true highlight of our program.”
Despite the challenges of her commute, Alba has found beauty in the connection between El Paso and Juárez. “At first, it was really hard, but in the end, you discover the magic of the border. You realize El Paso and Juárez are really one big city,” she said, reflecting on her transformative experience.
Family support has been crucial in Alba’s success story, particularly her mother, whose encouragement has fueled her ambition. Looking ahead, Alba plans to continue her education at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), aiming for a master’s degree and a career in teaching dance.
