URGENT UPDATE: The Museum of the American Revolution is set to host a powerful weekend dedicated to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from January 17-19, 2026. This unique event connects King’s influence to the Declaration of Independence through a series of talks, performances, and a special exhibition, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
The spotlight of the weekend is the exhibition “The Declaration’s Journey,” which explores the evolving interpretation of the Declaration over time. Notably, it features artifacts directly associated with Dr. King, including the actual metal prison bench he used while incarcerated in Birmingham in 1963, where he penned his iconic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
Additionally, the exhibition showcases significant materials related to the March on Washington, including an early distribution copy of King’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech. This compelling connection to Dr. King’s fight for civil rights underscores the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality in America.
Ahead of the main events, attendees can enjoy “AmRev Presents: The Declaration’s Journey in Concert” on Friday, January 16, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.. This concert combines music and storytelling to highlight leadership and civil rights movements throughout American history. Ticket prices include a reception and access to the special exhibition, providing an enriching cultural experience.
MLK Weekend programming also includes a variety of short talks, gallery tours, and performances, all designed to link the Revolutionary era to modern challenges in the pursuit of justice. Highlights encompass a final opportunity to view Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 anti-slavery essay “Liberty Further Extended,” and daily discussions emphasizing the power of words in social change.
Attendees can look forward to a theatrical performance portraying Elizabeth Freeman, a formerly enslaved woman who successfully fought for her freedom. Educator-led gallery talks will delve into the experiences of African Americans from the Revolutionary War through the Civil Rights Movement, while family-friendly activities will encourage participation in protest, poetry, and civic engagement.
For those interested in a deeper exploration, a guided “Black Voices of the Revolution” gallery tour will be available on Saturday and Sunday at noon for an additional fee.
All activities during MLK Weekend are included with regular museum admission, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Children ages 5 and under can enter for free, and all tickets are valid for two consecutive days, making this an excellent opportunity for families to engage with history.
