Heidecker’s mother had been living in an RV on their central Texas property since 2024 due to health issues. The family decided that a more permanent living solution was necessary. After receiving quotes for a tiny home ranging from $63,000 to $97,000, the couple took matters into their own hands.
“We started just playing with the idea of building a shell and a little barndo like ours, but tiny,” Heidecker explained. Their vision turned into reality when they began construction in September 2025 while her mom was away visiting family in Mexico.
The couple, who had no professional building experience, turned to online resources for guidance. “We were literally looking everything up and watching videos,” Heidecker stated. They hired professionals for the exterior shell and electrical work, but much of the labor was completed by themselves, ultimately costing around $33,000.
Heidecker, a 32-year-old stay-at-home mom, and her husband, a pilot, coordinated their busy schedules to make time for the project. “As he would get out of work, it was like, ‘OK, let’s go to work,'” she said. The finished tiny home mirrors their own barndominium, featuring a striking black roof, white walls, and a cozy open-concept living area. The family is already considering future enhancements to accommodate aging needs. “Having just a little bit more space would have been nice,” Heidecker noted, reflecting on the possibility of wheelchair accessibility.
