Flock Safety Pushes for License Plate Readers After Contract Canceled

URGENT UPDATE: Flock Safety is fighting to reinstate its plans for license plate readers in Hillsborough, North Carolina, after the town abruptly canceled their contract earlier this week. This decision has raised critical concerns about data privacy that could impact local safety measures.

Earlier this week, Hillsborough officials terminated their agreement with Flock Safety, which was set to install ten cameras for the town. The cancellation stemmed from fears surrounding Flock’s data sharing practices, with Mayor Mark Bell stating, “Flock retains the right to all the data and can share it with third parties and government agencies in very vague language.” The mayor emphasized that this was not what the town had signed up for.

In a response issued on Friday, November 3, 2023, Flock Safety expressed its desire to address these concerns directly with town leaders. A representative from Flock confirmed that they have requested a meeting to clarify the misconceptions around their technology and data management.

Flock Chief Legal Officer Dan Haley criticized the town’s decision, claiming it is based on misunderstandings. “The publicly stated reasons for Hillsborough’s action are entirely based on misconceptions about our technology,” he stated. Haley reassured that even when presented with a court order or subpoena, Flock prioritizes consulting with clients before sharing any information, unless legally prohibited.

Mayor Bell clarified that the planned cameras were intended solely for use by Hillsborough police to track vehicles involved in serious crimes. The installation and two years of operation were projected to cost more than $81,000, a financial commitment that Bell expressed uncertainty about recovering following the contract’s termination.

As of now, a spokesperson for the Town of Hillsborough has indicated that the town attorney is actively reviewing the situation, but no next steps have been confirmed. “We have a high degree of confidence that when given the opportunity to speak with our partners in Hillsborough, we will resolve their concerns and be able to move forward productively to make the residents of Hillsborough safer,” Haley added.

The outcome of this situation is critical for Hillsborough residents, as the planned license plate readers were intended to bolster community safety. With Flock Safety committed to overcoming the current challenges, all eyes are on the upcoming discussions between the company and town officials.
