Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Funeral Services Set

BREAKING: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Township community, has passed away at the age of 91 on December 19, 2025. His loss has left a profound impact on his family and friends, as he was known for his dedication to family, faith, and community service.

Born in Perry Township, Franklin was the son of the late James and Edna Schappell. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and spent many years working at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and was integral in making Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996. Franklin was also a member of Zion’s Church, where he contributed significantly to the maintenance of Zion’s Cemetery.

Franklin was predeceased by his wife, Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who died on July 31, 2019. He is survived by three sons: Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Township, Dennis J. Schappell, husband of Lisa Simmons from Centre Township, and Gregory C. Schappell, husband of Tulsa Hosmer from Shoemakersville. Additionally, he leaves behind three daughters: Denise E. Schappell from Perry Township, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill, wife of Dale Cahill from Geneva, OH. Franklin also had 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren who cherished him deeply.

His family described him as a passionate hunter, farmer, and gardener, with a strong commitment to reading the Bible. Franklin’s contributions to his community through sports and church activities will be remembered fondly.

Funeral services for Franklin G. Schappell will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will take place beforehand from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Zion’s Cemetery, Perry Township. The arrangements are being managed by Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc. in Hamburg.
