Fresno Police Launch Urgent DUI Crackdown This Weekend

UPDATE: Fresno Police are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving this weekend, issuing a stark warning to drivers. The crackdown begins at 6 P.M. on Saturday and runs until 4 A.M. on Sunday, coinciding with holiday celebrations.

Officials confirm that eleven additional officers will be deployed throughout the city, specifically targeting suspected drunk drivers. “The biggest thing is, don’t risk it,” said Sergeant Todd Turney. Authorities are on the lookout for traffic violations commonly associated with impaired driving, including weaving and speeding.

This urgent operation comes in the wake of a tragic incident that claimed the lives of Carlos and Maria Pimentel, a husband and wife from Coalinga, who were killed by a suspected DUI driver earlier this week. Shawn Borecha, the accused, is now facing two counts of murder after crashing into their vehicle while attempting to pass two cars under the influence.

“When you impair your ability to operate the vehicle, bad things happen, such as a collision,” said Sgt. Turney. “You can affect people and members of the community, as well as yourself.”

Authorities report that there were over 5,500 DUI cases recorded in Fresno County in 2025, with 423 of those cases classified as felonies due to serious injuries. Prosecutors noted that 15 victims lost their lives in preventable accidents linked to impaired driving, underscoring the dire consequences of such behavior.

The financial burden of a DUI is staggering, with first-time offenders facing an average cost exceeding $13,000 in fines, penalties, and license suspensions. Sergeant Turney advises drivers to prioritize safety: “Plan ahead, whether it’s a rideshare service, a family member, or a friend. Get to your location and back home safely.”

As the crackdown unfolds, Fresno Police urge the community to take these warnings seriously and make responsible choices. Stay tuned for further updates as the operation progresses.
