UPDATE: A remarkable turnout of over 80 students from Longwood Elementary School took center stage in Glenwood during their annual holiday concert on December 17, 2025. The event, which featured students from kindergarten to fourth grade, was fueled by early morning practices that began at 7 a.m., allowing students to participate despite busy schedules.
Skylar Jamison, a 9-year-old choir member, initially felt nervous about performing in front of a large audience. However, she expressed her joy after the show, saying, “I felt happy.” With encouragement from her friends, Skylar found her voice and confidence, showcasing the power of community and support in youth activities.
Principal Carnisha Mayze highlighted the significance of this year’s high attendance, attributing it to the school’s inclusive approach. “We’re able to offer more accommodating practice times,” Mayze said. This flexibility allows students to explore their musical talents while balancing after-school responsibilities.
The holiday concert not only entertained but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among families. The event featured activities like photos with Santa, crafts, and hot cocoa, creating a festive atmosphere for parents and children alike. “It’s important for young students to explore music,” Mayze stated, emphasizing the vital role of music in developing focus and discipline.
Edrinna Jamison, Skylar’s mother, praised the choir program for helping her daughter build confidence and express her individuality. “I’m just trying to give her more personality and see what she likes,” she said, reflecting on the transformative impact of these early morning practices.
The concert, held in the school’s gym, library, and cafeteria, served as a community gathering point. Mayze underscored the importance of family involvement in education, stating, “You can’t teach a child if you have not reached them.” This partnership fosters trust, making students feel more comfortable at school.
As the school year progresses, Principal Mayze and her staff are already brainstorming new ideas for next year’s event, aiming to keep the momentum going. The success of this holiday concert marks an important step in strengthening the bond between Longwood Elementary and its families.
With such a vibrant display of talent and community spirit, the Longwood Elementary holiday show serves as a reminder of the power of music and collaboration in shaping young lives. Families are encouraged to stay engaged, as more exciting developments are on the horizon for this enthusiastic school community.
