Greenville High Celebrates Holiday Dinner with Festive Cheer

URGENT UPDATE: Greenville High School just hosted its annual holiday dinner on December 9, 2023, bringing festive joy and a hearty meal to 1,100 students. The school’s Food and Nutrition Department, led by Dan Kuk, ensured that every student experienced a traditional holiday feast, featuring favorites like glazed maple carrots and freshly roasted ham.

This event is a vital opportunity for students who may not have access to such meals at home. With many families facing economic challenges, Kuk emphasized the importance of inclusivity: “Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal. We want every student to enjoy this holiday tradition.”

The meal, provided at no cost, highlights the district’s commitment to supporting its students. Kuk stated, “We work with the district to fund this meal for our students.” This initiative not only reinforces the community spirit but also ensures that international students can partake in an authentic American holiday experience.

The holiday dinner was complemented by the efforts of the DECA students, who helped with decorations and served dessert. DECA Vice President of Public Relations Emily Fox noted, “Volunteering here shows what DECA is about. We want to provide for everyone.” Their contributions included homemade apple crumble and cherry turnovers, adding a delightful sweet touch to the meal.

As students enjoyed their lunches, they were visited by Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, who entertained them as “Santa Claude,” alongside the Grinch. Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressed their excitement, stating, “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive.” The festive atmosphere created by music and decorations transformed the lunch experience into a memorable celebration.

The holiday dinner is not just a meal; it’s a cherished tradition that unites the student body. Kuk praised his staff for their dedication, saying, “I am blessed to have them. They really go above and beyond for our students.”

As the event continues to brighten the spirits of students, it serves as a reminder of the importance of community support during the holiday season. With the positive feedback from attendees, the district is encouraged to maintain and grow this tradition in the years to come.
