Greta Thunberg Banned from Venice After Green Canal Protest

BREAKING: Greta Thunberg and 36 Extinction Rebellion activists have been banned from Venice for 48 hours following a dramatic protest that turned the Grand Canal lime green on Monday. The action aimed to highlight the inadequate global response to climate change, particularly fossil fuel dependency.

The protest, which resembled a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, involved releasing non-toxic fluorescein dye into the famous waterways and unfurling a “Stop Ecocide” banner from the iconic Rialto Bridge. Dressed in red with veils, the group performed a mock funeral dirge, symbolizing the failure of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil to effectively address fossil fuel limits.

“We are symbolically painting green the waters of Italy, contaminated daily by industries supported by our own government,” said a spokesperson from Extinction Rebellion, identified as Selene. This demonstration was part of a larger campaign across 10 cities in Italy, aiming to draw attention to the climate crisis.

Local authorities reacted swiftly. Thunberg and the activists were fined $174 each, with Luca Zaia, the Governor of Veneto, condemning the act as “disrespectful” to Venice’s rich history and environmental challenges. “This is a fragile city, and we cannot allow such actions,” he stated.

Venice is particularly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing increased flooding due to rising sea levels. The city has seen Piazza San Marco submerged about 250 times annually this decade, and experts warn it could be submerged by 2100 if current policies continue.

As the situation develops, the global community is watching closely. Climate activists argue that urgent action is needed to prevent irreversible damage to cities like Venice. The consequences of inaction are dire, and the protests underscore the need for immediate policy changes.
