Grizzlies’ Edey to Miss Six More Weeks with Ankle Injury

UPDATE: The Memphis Grizzlies have confirmed that center Zach Edey will be sidelined for an additional six weeks as he continues to recover from a stress reaction in his left ankle. This announcement, made on December 13, 2023, means Edey’s return is now pushed back to late January.

Edey’s injury has kept him out of action since December 7, raising concerns for the team as they navigate a challenging season. The Grizzlies expect to miss his contributions, especially as they face the Orlando Magic in Berlin tomorrow as part of a crucial two-game European road trip.

According to the team’s official statement, “Based on the unanimous recommendation of consulting experts, Edey will continue on his current plan of offloading and rehabilitation, with a reevaluation to follow in approximately six weeks.” The news is particularly disheartening for fans given Edey’s impressive track record, having been named the two-time AP National Player of the Year at Purdue.

While Edey remains out, the Grizzlies are hopeful for the return of Brandon Clarke and Scotty Pippen Jr., who are expected back in four to six weeks. Clarke has been recovering from a calf strain sustained during a game against Washington on December 20, while Pippen underwent a toe procedure on October 21.

Edey previously missed 12 games early in his rookie season due to a sprained left ankle but returned to play in 66 games. After undergoing surgery on his ankle in June and missing the first 13 games of the current season, he finally made his debut on November 15, averaging 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds before his latest setback.

As the Grizzlies prepare for their matchup against the Magic, the absence of Edey looms large. The team’s performance will be closely watched, particularly as they strive to maintain competitiveness in the NBA landscape without their key player. Fans and analysts alike will be looking for updates on Edey’s rehabilitation and the potential impact on the Grizzlies’ season trajectory.
