Guardians Sign Rhys Hoskins to Minor League Deal for Power Boost

The Cleveland Guardians have strengthened their roster by signing first baseman Rhys Hoskins to a minor league contract. According to Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the deal includes a potential payout of $1.5 million if Hoskins makes the major league roster. This signing comes as the Guardians seek to address their ongoing power shortage in the lineup.

Between 2018 and 2022, Hoskins was a formidable presence for the Philadelphia Phillies, demonstrating consistent power with a batting line of .241/.350/.483 over 2,665 plate appearances. During this period, he recorded 130 home runs and 142 doubles, hitting at least 27 homers in every full season outside of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, and surpassing 30 home runs on two occasions.

Rhys Hoskins was expected to play a central role in the Phillies’ batting order in 2023. However, a torn ACL sidelined him for the entire season. Following his recovery, he signed a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers that was valued at $34 million, featuring an opt-out after 2024 and a mutual option for 2026. Despite this lucrative deal, Hoskins struggled to regain his pre-injury form, posting a batting line of .223/.314/.418 in 845 plate appearances, with 38 homers and 26 doubles.

With Hoskins now joining the Guardians, he could fill a vital role in their lineup as they aim for contention in 2026. The team currently relies heavily on players such as Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan to deliver consistent offensive production. Hoskins could complement the left-handed hitting of Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus, creating opportunities for a platoon situation.

If Hoskins can maintain his health and return to the form that made him a key contributor for the Phillies, he has the potential to be a valuable asset for the Guardians. This low-cost signing may prove to be a significant move for a team looking to enhance its offensive capabilities ahead of the upcoming seasons.
