Hawai‘i Celebrates 100th Public Pre-K Classroom Opening

UPDATE: Hawai‘i has just opened its 100th public pre-kindergarten classroom at Maunawili Elementary School on Oʻahu, marking a historic milestone in the state’s commitment to providing universal access to early education for its youngest residents, affectionately known as keiki. This exciting development was confirmed by the Hawaiian Government Newsroom, with Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke attending the inauguration alongside officials from the Executive Office on Early Learning (EOEL).

This milestone reflects a remarkable surge in public pre-K classrooms, skyrocketing from just 37 in 2022 to 117 classrooms across 89 locations statewide. “Just a few years ago, there were only a few dozen public pre-K classrooms statewide. Now, we’re celebrating our 100th. This just shows Hawai‘i’s commitment to every child, every family, and every community,” Lt. Gov. Luke stated, emphasizing the importance of the Ready Keiki initiative.

The newly opened classroom in Maunawili is not just a number; it represents a critical opportunity for families in Windward Oʻahu. Each classroom can accommodate up to 20 students aged 3 and 4, with priority enrollment for children in foster care or those facing homelessness. This strategic approach underscores the state’s dedication to supporting its most vulnerable populations.

The EOEL’s mission continues as they plan for further expansion of pre-K education throughout Hawai‘i. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we know our work continues,” stated Yuuko Arikawa-Cross, EOEL Director. “Every new classroom represents a doorway to opportunity for families. Our goal is to meet families where they are and ensure every keiki in Hawai‘i has access to a strong start.”

Families interested in enrolling their children can apply for a seat or join the waitlist through the EOEL’s website, with ongoing enrollment now available. For immediate inquiries, families can contact EOEL at (808) 784-5350.

In addition to the opening at Maunawili, significant expansions occurred in August 2025, establishing new public pre-K classrooms across the islands of Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, Maui, and Oʻahu. Notable new locations include Kalaniʻanaʻole Elementary & Intermediate on Hawaii Island and a Hawaiian language classroom at Hāna High and Elementary on Maui.

This educational initiative not only represents a leap toward universal access but also highlights Hawaiʻi’s proactive steps in laying down a robust foundation for its future generation. As the state moves forward, the focus remains on ensuring that every keiki can thrive in a nurturing educational environment.
